Public invited to view plans for conservation

PEOPLE can learn more about improvement works proposed for the centre of Almondbury.

Exhibitions will be held in the Huddersfield village between March 20 and 31 giving details of the project designed to enhance the conservation area by restoring or upgrading features.

The proposed work will be concentrated mainly along Westgate and the top of Fenay Lane and St Helens Gate.

It will include:

New stone kerbs and paving for footpaths;

Heritage-style street lighting with lantern heads on Westgate;

A new half-width parking bay outside the church on Westgate and restricted parking along the opposite side of Westgate outside the Conservative Club to help to improve the setting of the listed medieval Conservative Club and improve pedestrian access along the pavement;

Heritage-style street nameplates and refurbishment of original ones;

Refurbishment of the old railings, sign and bollard at the junction of St Helens Gate and Fenay Lane and the bollards at the top of Wormald Street;

Landscaping improvements to the area outside the shops/ maisonettes on Northgate and two sites on Westgate;

Repair and repainting of coal house doors on Northgate;

Improvements to the war memorial site.

It is also a proposed to resurface the top section of Fenay Lane and replace three speed cushions with speed plateaux.

A mobile exhibition of the proposals will visit Westgate and council officers will be available to explain the proposals, gather comments and answer questions. It will be open on Saturday, from 10am to 1pm and Wednesday, March 24, from 4pm to 7pm.

The proposals will also be displayed at Aimbry's Cafe on Northgate and at Almondbury Library between March 20 and March 31. Feedback forms will be available for comments and suggestions for improvements.

Coun Peter McBride, Kirklees Council's cabinet member for regeneration, environment and transport said: "Almondbury has a unique and memorable visual heritage and the proposals aim to preserve and strengthen it for the future.
