Public urged to have say on protecting the countryside as deadline nears

THE public have been urged to have their say on protecting North Yorkshire’s prized countryside and wildlife ahead of a deadline at the weekend.

The North Yorkshire and York Local Nature Partnership’s public consultation on its aims and strategy will end on Sunday.

Comments which have been received so far have called for more tree planting to help combat climate change, and highlighted the need to conserve species as well as the role of the LNP in the planning process. New locations have also been proposed for prioritising conservation activity.

The LNP is one of 48 which have been set up in England and it has already identified seven “rural landscape priority areas” where the work will be focused initially.

They are Long Preston Wet Grassland Project, River Swale Landscape Project, River Ure Landscape Project, Selby Landscape Project, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Vale of Pickering Landscape Project, and the North York Moors National Park and Coast.

Following the consultation, comments will be used to form the final strategy which will be launched in the spring. To find out more, visit www.nypartnerships.org.uk/lnp or call 01609 533240.
