Public views sought on academy plan

A PUBLIC consultation exercise is being carried out in the catchment area of Aston School in Rotherham over the possibility of it opting out of council control and becoming an academy.

Representatives of the staff and governors at the 1,600 pupil school have met Aston Parish Council to discuss the potential move.

Treeton Parish Council is holding a public meeting next month to discuss the proposal. It will also be raised at the next Rotherham Council Rother Valley West Area Assembly, in Aston, in January.

The chairman of Aston Parish Council and governor at the school, John Swift, said: "Two comprehensive schools in this area at Brinsworth and Wales have got academy status and it is felt it would be best for Aston Comprehensive School if it had academy status which takes it out of local authority control and makes it like a private school."

The Government has invited all schools rated as outstanding to apply for academy status.
