Public vote sought on city's favourite tourist experience

THE public are being given the chance to nominate their favourite attraction in an online poll showcasing one of the country's most popular tourism destinations.

Tourism chiefs in York have launched a nationwide search using social networking websites including Facebook and Twitter to find the city's most treasured experience.

The winning nomination will be honoured in a new category for the Visit York Tourism Awards, which are now in their 14th year and will see the annual ceremony held at York Racecourse on April 6.

Visit York's chief executive, Gillian Cruddas, said: "This year we wanted to offer the public the opportunity to have their say. We will be using Twitter and Facebook to encourage a lively debate on the nation's favourite York experience and we hope everyone will get involved and let us know what makes a visit to York special for them."

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has nominated a visit to the Minster as his favourite experience in the city.

Dr Sentamu, the Tourism Ambassador for York, said: "York is one of the greatest cities in Britain. My favourite York experience would be a visit to York Minster which speaks of the glory of God, and the creative imagination of human beings. It is a magnificent building which brings joy to so many people."

All entrants will be entered into a draw to win a luxury break in York. Nominations can be made via www.visityork.org, www.facebook.com/visityork, www.twittter.com/visityork or by collecting a form from the Visit York Information Centre in Museum Street.
