Pulling back the covers and preparing for special event

There is a bit of early Spring cleaning and conservation work going on at one historic property in York.

Staff at the National Trust’s Treasurer’s House are preparing for a Residents Free Weekend which gives visitors a chance to look behind the scenes.

Tom Johnson, House Steward at the Treasurer’s House, is pictured cleaning a chandelier and preparing for the special opening in the Queen’s Room which gets its name from the visit by the future King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1900. The property’s Blue Drawing Room is currently under wraps for the winter closure but staff are the getting the house ready to welcome visitors.

The Residents Free Weekend is a special opening, which takes place on Saturday, January 31 and Sunday Feb 1, between 11am-3pm. There is free entry for York residents.

A spokeswoman for the National Trust said yesterday the event was a chance to: “Peak under the covers and get behind the scenes as the team reveal what’s involved in looking after over 1,000 objects spanning four centuries of history.”

Treasurer’s House is a town house in the centre of York which also features a walled garden.

The property’s 2,000 year history includes a reportedly haunted Roman road in the cellar and Edwardian servants’ quarters in the attics, together with a number of period rooms.
