Pulp Fiction, Queen and two meals out a month, a snapshot of life for the average thirty something

The survey of 2,000 people aged between 30 and 35 years old for Nationwide Savings also suggests that people in this age group have typically spent more than three years saving for a house deposit and have £343 a month in disposable income.

Those surveyed splashed out on two meals out, two nights out and one trip to the cinema per month on average, according to the findings.

Their musical tastes are a mix of old and new, with Queen, the Beatles and Bon Jovi sitting alongside Rihanna and Lady Gaga among their favourite music acts. Oasis was in 10th place on the favourites list and old rivals Blur failed to make the top 10.

While 46 per cent of thirtysomethings surveyed said they were satisfied with their chosen career, 55 per cent felt underpaid for the work they do. Nearly one in five (19 per cent) people were not happy with their career.

When payday comes around, 37 per cent of thirtysomethings would ideally like to splash out on clothing, while 35 per cent said they would like to enjoy a meal out and 32 per cent would want to head for the pub.

Meanwhile, 28 per cent of those surveyed would want to put some of their pay packet towards a holiday abroad.

In reality, 70 per cent of those surveyed said their pay packet ended up being sucked up by outgoings such as rent and bills.

Thirtysomethings’ favourite TV shows were found to include Friends, The X Factor and Come Dine With Me. And although they watch more than 11 hours of television a week on average, they will also read around seven books a year.

Asked about their regrets, many people surveyed said that they wished they had saved more money, or travelled more.

With £4,300 typically put away in savings, 30 per cent of thirtysomethings were putting their cash away for big travel plans - while 27 per cent were building a deposit for a house.
