Pupils get their cars into top gear for indoor championship

IT was the wacky races at a North Yorkshire junior school when more than 40 cars created by a group of pupils were put to the test.

The children, from Ashville Junior School in Harrogate, had been hard at work for weeks custom-designing their vehicles to get them at maximum speed before yesterday's race in the school hall.

But the youngsters' mean machines lost nothing in looks as well with designs ranging from a spaceship to a vacuum cleaner.

Ashville Junior School head teacher Jonathan Dolman said: "The year 5 pupils have put a lot of effort and time into creating their cars for yesterday's race and we were very impressed with the detail at some of the designs.

"We raced the models in the school hall and after some very close ties awarded prizes for best use of aerodynamics, best design and furthest distance travelled.

"It was a very tough decision to make.

"We already had to cancel the races once so it was brilliant for everybody involved to finally see the chequered flag and put the cars to the test."

The competition was judged by Mark Robinson, owner of the Vantage Toyota dealership and an Ashville Junior School parent, who also provided the prizes the top three winners in each category, and consolation gifts for all the pupils taking part.
