Pupils getting ready to compete in vegetable classes at summer show

PRIMARY school teachers are hoping pupils' green fingers will point the way to a healthier lifestyle as the youngsters compete to be top of the crops at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Children at St John's Primary School in Knaresborough yesterday took delivery of their vegetable box to begin planting for the contest involving pupils across the region.

The school is one of 32 across Yorkshire which are taking part in the Yorkshire Agricultural Society's Schools Veggie Box competition.

The contest aims to encourage young people to grow their own healthy vegetables, and the growers of the best 10 boxes invited to visit this year's Great Yorkshire Show, which starts on Tuesday, July 13.

This week, the first boxes and compost are being delivered to schools in the region ready for the youngsters, from as far afield as Harrogate, Halifax, York, Doncaster and Thirsk, to get growing.

Mike Prest, the competition co-ordinator and adviser to the Garden Show, said: "The aim of the competition is to encourage healthy eating and to encourage children to enjoy healthy, home-grown produce."

The overall winners at the Great Yorkshire Show will judged by the gardening expert Christine Walkden of the BBC's The One Show.
