Pupils’ golden moment

RAIN may have stopped outdoor play for their sports day, but children at an Otley primary school had a once-in-a-lifetime experience when British Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave joined in their games.

The five-times gold medal winning rower, 50, appeared at morning assembly and showed off a few moves in a salsa dance session.

Sir Steve was at Whartons Primary as ambassador for a programme that supports sport and PE activity in schools in partnership with the Youth Sport Trust.

“It’s been a really enjoyable morning and it’s fantastic to see the kids having so much fun,” said Sir Steve. “It’s vital we continue to support the teachers running PE lessons. Sport has a unique ability to transform young lives.”

Among the many questions pupils asked was how much a gold medal is worth.
