Pupils sum up excitement over Olympics

While the nation celebrated 100 days to go until the opening ceremony of the Olympics yesterday, one of its best chances for a gold medal barely gave it a second thought.

And in any case, Jessica Ennis’s coach Toni Minichiello was quick to point out that in terms of her heptathlon competition in London, it was actually 107 days.

“The number of days don’t mean too much to me because I’m just focused on my next training session, my javelin competition that I’ve got coming up and then the heptathlon in Gotzis,” she said

The athlete was in her home city of Sheffield yesterday speaking at a workshop for the Jaguar Academy of Sport at the English Institute of Sport in the city, where she completed a full day’s training before passing on her expertise to the academy’s rising stars.

In Leeds, 100 pupils from schools across the city made a human figure of 100 in Millennium Square, spelling out the countdown to the Olympics. It was one of a number of events yesterday marking 100 days to go to the start of London 2012.

In the capital, stars of West End shows marked the countdown with a warm-up in Trafalgar Square. The rain-hit routine, at the foot of the official countdown clock, part of a campaign to promote the industry amid fears people might not attend shows during the Games.

An event at Kew Gardens, London, saw the unveiling of giant Olympic rings in a flower display which will be visible from flights arriving at Heathrow Airport.

London 2012 chairman Lord Coe yesterday revealed the motto for the games would be: ‘Inspire a Generation.’

He added: “We have an obligation to get these Games right for our competitors.”

It was also revealed David Beckham’s Olympic dream remains intact after he was among players told they are still in contention for a place in Team GB’s football squad.
