Pupils on Yorkshire coast learn about their fishing heritage

Staff at Hornsea School and Language College have put together a package of materials which looks at a wide range of topics from the green energy industry to sea shanties.

The materials will be used in a broad swathe of lessons in sibjects including business studies, geography and maths.

Headteacher Steve Lawrence said: “Hornsea School and Language College is proud to be at the heart of the community, and I am delighted that we have been able to design this pack, because the fishing industry is so important to the area.

“We are always actively working to broaden our pupils’ horizons, and I must commend Sally Richardson, our community partnership co-ordinator, for bringing this pack to fruition.”

The project was funded by the Holderness Coast Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG), a public-private partnership to promote and grow the contribution of the fisheries industry to the local community..

Ray Williamson, from Holderness Coast FLAG which is backed by EU funding, said: “I am very excited that we have been able to fund this educational resource pack, as it is vital that we ensure that children and young people in the area know the importance of the local fishing industry.”
