Quad bike joins police fleet

Illegal off-road motorcyclists have been warned that police officers will now be able to pursue them across all terrains after South Yorkshire Police took delivery of its own quad bike.

The machine, which has been donated by motorcycle manufacturer Kymco, will be used by specially trained officers who say they are waging an ongoing battle against anti-social behaviour.

Pc Craig White, pictured above, and Pc Brett Thompson have been given lessons on how to drive the quad bike safely, on- and off-road, and have also been provided with protective clothing for all-weather riding.

Funding for the training on the 400cc quad came from the Safer Rotherham Partnership, which is funded by several public bodies including the police and Rotherham Council.

Pc White said: "The bike will allow us access to otherwise inaccessible parts of the community and also extends the capability of how we respond to anti-social behaviour and calls about nuisance vehicles."

The officers will also take the quad into schools to show teenagers how it will be used and explain the dangers of off-road motorcycling.
