Quarry outcry fails to stop licence

A QUARRY that received hundreds of complaints from angry residents has been granted permission to continue operating for another 10 years.

Mytholm Quarry and Stone Sales in Southowram, Halifax, was given the go-ahead to continue quarrying until 2020, despite more than 100 letters objecting to the application.

Residents complained that too many lorries were using the narrow country lanes to deliver stone which breached the 10-vehicle per week maximum limit which had been allowed by previous planning permission.

They also said that the quarry had lain semi-dormant for several years and that the main noise and disruption was caused by a saw shed which operated within the quarry site.

Councillors on the planning committee said they had no choice but to allow the quarry to continue operating, but have said the amount of lifting at the quarry must be reviewed every 12 months.

A decision about whether the saw shed will be granted planning permission will be considered at a later date.

Quarry owner Roy Taylor said he was relieved by the decision.
