The Quo announce seaside trip

VETERAN rockers Status Quo will play in Scarborough next summer in a move aimed at bolstering the resort’s beleaguered Open Air Theatre.

The Brit Award-winning band, who have sold more than 118m records worldwide, will appear at the resort’s Open Air Theatre on Saturday, July 27.

The announcement is the first of the theatre’s events for next summer, and it is hoped to provide reassurances about the future of the venue. Scarborough Borough Council was forced earlier this year to step in at the 11th hour when operators Apollo Leisure failed to announce its summer programme, leaving the authority with a matter of weeks to secure big name artists.

The council’s cabinet member for tourism and culture, Coun David Chance, said: “We are really pleased that we have been able to announce the first act for next summer’s line up before Christmas. By continuing with the same management set-up we established earlier this year, we’ve been able to negotiate with artists’ agents much earlier.

“We are currently in discussions with a number of other artists and we hope to be able to announce more acts in the very near future.”

Tickets for Status Quo’s gig will go on sale to residents at 9am on Saturday before general release.
