Race is on to unearth very special solid gold pumpkin

YORK jeweller Werk by TCJ Designs is used to producing bespoke engagement rings, necklaces and bracelets, but one recent commission was more unusual than anything created before.

They were asked by York Maze to design and make a nine carat gold... pumpkin.

The seasonal special order, worth over £1000, is to be a prize at the attraction’s Halloween events. York Maze owner Tom Pearcy said: “The gold pumpkin will be won by whoever finds the Willy Wonka style Golden Ticket inside their pumpkin when they carve it.

“We have over 5000 pumpkins to choose from as part of the family Halloween event, so I imagine it will be quite a surprise for whoever finds it.”

The lucky pumpkin will be hidden in the pumpkin patch between October 22 and October 25. It is one of many Halloween events planned at York Maze, including a Ghostmania ride, haunted house, ghost storytelling, spooky trails in the maze and more.

Carl Johnson from Werk by TCJ Designs said: “It is quite a challenging piece to produce to get the carving right to create a traditional pumpkin lantern design.

“It must be the smallest pumpkin carving task in the world!”
