Racecourse to face court over cyclist’s death

YORK Racecourse is being prosecuted by health and safety chiefs following the death of a 17-year-old cyclist.

York College student Ruby Milnes was killed in May 2008 after being struck by a lorry while cycling on the Sustrans York to Selby cycle route which crossed an access road to the racecourse.

After a long-running investigation into the incident, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said it had summoned York Racecourse Knavesmire LLP to appear at York Magistrates’ Court next month, charged with two safety breaches – in particular during the build-up phase for a race meeting.

A statement issued by the racecourse said: “We offer [the family and friends of Ruby Milnes] our sincere condolences.”

It said the racecourse took its responsibilities in the area of health and safety very seriously.

York Racecourse has a good relationship with the relevant authorities and has faced no previous such proceedings.
