Racegoers reminded of 70th anniversary

The 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain has been remembered with a tribute to Yorkshire's own flyers that went on show to crowds gathering at York Race Course for John Smith's Cup Day.

As part of the commemoration, a replica mark V Spitfire was on display on the weighing room lawn. The aircraft is painted in the markings of Flt Lt Joe Atkinson, of 609 Squadron, Auxiliary Air Force. The squadron was based at Yeadon and made up of part-time auxiliary flyers from all over Yorkshire.

The pilots went on to become one of the most successful fighter units of the Battle of Britain.
