Rail bridge work to disrupt traffic

MOTORISTS face severe disruption during a year-long project to improve a railway bridge on one of Doncaster's busiest roads.

Engineers will begin the rebuild scheme in September with extensive work on the Balby railway bridge, which carries the main A630 between the town centre and the A1(M).

According to Doncaster Council, work is required to strengthen and refurbish the bridge and its concrete supports to ensure it remains safe. The bridge carries the road over the east coast main line.

The authority's assistant director of development, Andy Gutherson, said: "We appreciate these works will affect a large number of residents, businesses and motorists. We apologise for the disruption it will cause and ask that people are patient while the work is ongoing."

The Kelham Street industrial estate and large numbers of homes will be affected by road closures and traffic restrictions. The council said work was set to start on Monday, September 20 lasting about 12 months. During that time the bridge will be completely closed on some weekends.

The first closure will take place between 8pm on Saturday, September 25 and 6am on Monday September 27.
