Rail colleagues plan five-race marathon challenge for charity

Two colleagues from the Siemens train maintenance depot on Leeman Road, York, are taking on the challenge of running five marathons in five days to raise money for the blood cancer charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Friends Izzy Mustafa, 30, and John Gilbody, 36, will start the epic challenge on Monday August 19, running a marathon through Manchester, followed by a further 26.2 miles per day around Broadbottom, Worsbrough, Bentley and finishing at the Siemens deport in York on Friday August 23.

Siemens is sponsoring the challenge and Izzy and John will be joined by colleague Joe Eason, 20, who will drive the support vehicle after picking up an injury and being unable to run.

Izzy said: “I don’t think we could ever feel fully prepared and I’m not sure what we have let ourselves in for just yet. I have always enjoyed a challenge so I had a chat with John at work and the next thing we knew we were training!

“We both have a habit of pushing each other and it becomes very competitive. We have a rough strategy for the event.”
