Rail trip on track to support heroes

Rail passengers were taken on a journey through the Yorkshire Dales yesterday to raise funds for charities supporting Britain's armed forces.

More than 200 people travelled on services hauled by a diesel engine, the Poseidon, along the Wensleydale Railway between Leeming Bar and Redmire yesterday. A locomotive which was used by the Royal Family, called Prince William, had been due to be employed for the event, but broke down on Friday as it was leaving the National Railway Museum in York.

Organisers hope to raise more than 1,000 from the trip. The cash will be split between Help For Heroes, which supports members of the armed forces wounded in current conflicts, and the Royal British Legion.
