Railway Bishop remembered

His love of Britain's rail heritage earned him the nickname of the Railway Bishop.

And the Right Rev Eric Treacy, who was the eighth Bishop of Wakefield, was remembered yesterday when a steam locomotive bearing his name was re-dedicated on one of the country's most picturesque rail routes.

Two bishops with links to Wakefield were on hand for the ceremony – the current Bishop of Wakefield, the Right Rev Stephen Platten, right, with former Archbishop of York and the 10th Bishop of Wakefield, Dr David Hope.

Bishop Platten re-dedicated the locomotive, 45428 Eric Treacy, at Pickering Station after an 11-year overhaul costing 600,000 has allowed it to return it to service on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Pickering to Whitby.

Eric Treacy was the Bishop of Wakefield from 1968 until 1976. His 12,000 railway photographs are now at the National Railway Museum in York.
