Railway bridge builders steam ahead

A main support girder is swung into place during work to install a new bridge to keep the North Yorkshire Moors Railway rolling.

The scheme, which was funded by a 1m appeal, entered a crucial stage yesterday when steel beams were lifted into position for what has been the most challenging engineering project faced by the railway for many years. Work on the site of Bridge 30, between Goathland and Grosmont, has been going on all winter to dismantle and remove the old bridge.
