Railway Children stage team take on another children's classic tale

THE creative team behind a critically acclaimed theatre production of The Railway Children is overseeing a stage version of another of Britain's best-loved children's tales.

The Wind in the Willows will be performed at York Theatre Royal in the summer, with a new stage being built to allow audiences a different perspective.

The design will mean that audience members will sit around the action at Toad Hall in the latest version of Kenneth Grahame's children's story, which was first published in 1908.

A Theatre Royal spokeswoman said: "The Wind in the Willows is such a well-loved story, and we feel privileged to be able to stage a production of a book which holds a special place in so many people's hearts.

"The fact that we have got the creative team involved who were responsible for The Railway Children means that it will undoubtedly be a major theatre event."

The production team is being led by the York Theatre Royal's artistic director, Damian Cruden.

Their version of Edith Nesbit's classic children's story was performed at the National Railway Museum and featured a steam locomotive – Stirling Single – built in 1870.

The Wind in the Willows will run from July 22 until August 21.
