From railway to greenway

A FORMER railway line which once linked Dewsbury and Ossett has been given a makeover to become a greenway for walkers and cyclists.

The work has been financed with money from the Big Lottery Fund and is part of a national scheme to provide new routes between communities.

Kirklees Council and the charity Sustrans were involved in the project, which has involved refurbishing a viaduct and bridges across the River Calder, as well as reopening the Earlsheaton tunnel.

Kirklees Coun Cathy Scott said: “The greenway is already proving its worth as a quick and easy way of getting visitors and residents into Dewsbury town centre to make the most of the market and other amenities there, which also helps local businesses. Using it will keep people fit.”
