Rape arrest after two sexual assaults in Rotherham

POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of rape after two serious sexual assaults took place in South Yorkshire last Friday night.

The first incident happened at about 11.30pm when a 27-year-old woman was attacked and sexually assaulted in Moorgate Road, Rotherham.

Around an hour and a half later, police were called following a break-in at a nearby address, also in the Moorgate area.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said yesterday: “The two females at this address were seriously assaulted.

“One of the females, the younger of the two, was also subjected to a serious sexual assault.”

The man, aged 26, was arrested yesterday and is being questioned.

The spokesman added: “He was arrested in the Moorgate area this morning on suspicion of rape and he remains in custody where
he will be questioned by detectives.

“Officers will continue to make enquiries and high visibility patrols will continue in the area.”

Meanwhile, police have also appealed for anyone with any CCTV in the area to come forward, as they may hold “key pieces of information”.

Rotherham District Commander, Chief Superintendent Jason Harwin, said: “I’m grateful for the support from the public so far and thankful to those who have phoned in with information.

“However, people need to remain vigilant and I would urge anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously to contact police.”

Anyone with any information to assist the investigation should call South Yorkshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 730 of September 28.

Police have been conducting house-to-house enquiries and have also increased patrols in the Moorgate area.
