Rare breed lambs set for public debut

Baby badger-faced sheep, including the twins held by volunteer Rachel Griffiths, will be the star attractions at a city farm in a few days – as they have been born just in time for one of the attraction's biggest events.

Staff at Heeley City Farm in Sheffield were expecting the lambs sometime late this month but were delighted when they put in an appearance early last week.

The rare breed animals are among several new arrivals in the farmyard, with two other ewes due to lamb in the next few days and chicks arriving all the time.

Badger-faced sheep originate in the Welsh mountains and the youngsters are expected to need constant care and attention from staff in the first few weeks.

The staff and volunteers are now hoping that they will be on display for families who visit the farm next Saturday, when the gates will open for the annual spring fair between 10am and 4pm. Visitors will also be able to try their hand at pottery in the newly-built Iron Age roundhouse on site and enjoy food from the refurbished caf.

The farm on Richards Road, Heeley, is run as an environmental charity, and was founded in 1981. Entry is free, but donations are welcome.
