Rare market given extra star rating

HALIFAX Borough Market is even more important than anyone thought.

Its rarity is such that English Heritage has decided to promote it from a grade II-listed building to grade II*.

Nine out of 10 listed buildings are grade II but only one in 20 has a star rating.

Built in the early 1890s, it is one of the country’s few surviving examples of a 19th century glazed market hall. Calderdale Council’s economy and environment spokesman, Barry Collins said: “The market is a big part of Calderdale’s architectural heritage and is a fine example of its type – it’s also a really great place to shop,” said Councillor Collins who represents Illingworth and Mixenden for Labour. ‘‘We all hope that visitors will take time to come and see this splendid building and maybe spend some money there.’’

The market was built by local architects Joseph and John Leeming, who gained a reputation for designing covered markets. English Heritage has commended it for its elaborate glass roof, embellished by a richly ornate cast-iron structure, an original cast-iron clock and the perimeter shops.

The council has recently spent more than £400,000 restoring the chimneys.
