Rare sheep provide raw material

FARMING has been an inspiration to Ryedale artist Sarah Venus, whose raw materials include fleeces of rare sheep from her family flock near Scarborough.

The gallery at Ryedale Folk Museum is showing a series of her sculptural felt pieces and prints in an exhibition which runs until June 20: the first in a series of four shows at the gallery featuring the best of contemporary arts in Ryedale.

She said: "My three dimensional felt forms are made from the fleeces of rare and minority indigenous sheep, often from the farm flock from my home near Scarborough.

"Some of my work incorporates other materials such as rubber and bristles, hopefully creating a thought provoking and sometimes disturbing result."

Andy Dalton, gallery manager, added: "Her use of rare and locally sourced fleeces give her work an organic quality, but her incorporation of man-made elements such as rubber and plastic give her work a unique edge."

The artist's work, which includes lino-printing, machine embroidery and felt-making, has been featured in various collections and has been exhibited in Canada, France and the UK.

Admission to the gallery at Ryedale Folk Museum, Hutton le Hole, is free. Opening times are 10am-4.30pm daily.
