Rare transplantdouble at hospital

Hospital staff carried out two heart-lung transplants on consecutive days, a procedure performed only three times in the whole of the UK last year.

Two patients at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge underwent the vital treatment on January 3 and 4 and are said to be recovering well.

Director of the Transplant Service, Steven Tsui, said. “We are delighted that both patients are doing well following their surgery.

“Combined heart lung transplantation is becoming less common because of severe donor organ shortages and it is remarkable that our team was able to carry out these two operations on consecutive days.”
