Readers and businesses can help to give victims precious gift

For many families across Yorkshire, the coming festive season will be an occasion for creating happy memories that will last a lifetime.

But for more than 58,000 people affected by dementia in the region and their loved ones, it can be an especially difficult and emotional time of year.

Today the Yorkshire Post launches its Christmas Appeal in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society, which provides vital support and services to many of these families, as well as funding critical research that could one day offer them hope.

We are calling on readers and businesses to help give patients and carers these precious gifts by making a donation or bidding in our online auction.

The money raised will all go to help people in Yorkshire who are affected by the condition, helping to fund local services which could include the charity’s Singing for the Brain choir groups and dementia cafes.

Alzheimer’s Society chief executive Jeremy Hughes said: “We are delighted that the Yorkshire Post has chosen to support our work in its Christmas Appeal 2013.

“The money raised will fund services providing direct help to people living with dementia and their carers in Yorkshire.”

Leeds law firm Clarion, which is sponsoring this year’s appeal, said it had been an easy decision for it to put its weight behind such a worthy cause.

Managing partner Mark Burns said: “Our private client team regularly work with the Alzheimer’s Society, providing advice to their service users and their families on the Mental Capacity Act, putting in place lasting power of attorney and other legal issues that people face after a diagnosis of dementia.

“One of the most distressing and difficult issues facing many families is caring for loved ones who are no longer able to live independently or conduct their own affairs through the onset of dementia, and we do all we can to help make things that little bit easier.

“By sponsoring this charity we at Clarion are doing our little bit to reinforce our commitment to the fight against dementia.”

Mr Burns added: “There are
a fabulous selection of prizes
on offer and we really do encourage you to get online, review the packages available and get bidding.”
