Reason for death of caravan baby remains a mystery after five days

A BABY who died after he was found unconscious at a Yorkshire holiday park was named by police yesterday as inquiries continued to establish the cause of death.

Reece Smith was staying with his parents in a caravan at Flamingo Land, near Malton in North Yorkshire, when his mother could not wake him at about 6.30am on Thursday last week.

The 16-month-old baby, who lived in West Denton Park near Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was treated at the scene by paramedics before he was taken by ambulance to Scarborough District Hospital.

Medical staff at the hospital battled in vain to revive Reece, and police were notified about the death at 8am that day.

The caravan that the family had been staying in was examined and officers carried out inquiries at the holiday park as part of the police investigation which has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

Nothing suspicious has been found and a North Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed yesterday that the cause of death remained unexplained.

A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday but the results are not expected to be available until today at the earliest.
