Receivers hope to revitalise project

A company is hoping to get a stalled regeneration scheme back on track more than a year after a developer went into liquidation.

Planning permission has been granted for a 78-bedroom hotel and the junction of Globe Road and Water Lane in Holbeck Urban Village, Leeds.

The plans, including a bar, restaurant and gym, are being handled by chartered surveyors Eddisons after owner Holbeck Estates Ltd went into liquidation.

Councillors in Leeds have now granted permission for the five-storey hotel development.

Eddisons took over the development site after being appointed as receivers in May last year.

Leeds-based Simon Croft of Eddisons said: "We are confident that we will attract interest from a number of suitable developers who can bring this part of the scheme to fruition."

Mr Croft, who will be responsible for marketing the scheme, said high quality accommodation "is at a premium" in Leeds.

He is optimistic that two further applications on adjacent development sites will be approved shortly.

These include outline consent for a scheme including flats and retail and leisure space on land at Globe Road, close to the Round Foundry Media Centre.

The final detailed application awaiting approval is for a scheme for offices, retail and leisure outlets.

Mr Croft said: "If approved, these additional applications, added to the hotel scheme will form a major development project in a key regeneration area. It would be the biggest scheme of its kind to come to market in Leeds for a number of years."

The full site is over five acres, most of which is currently used for car parking.

"We have ensured that the revenue potential of the site has been maximised during the planning application process, which has contributed towards the overall funding of the scheme."

Holbeck Urban Village is a regeneration project which started in 1999.
