PE teachers Katrina Fairbairn and Shona Jagger, matron Erica Melsom and first aider Sue Igoe worked together to carry out CPR and used the school’s defibrillator to shock 15-year-old Alex Cowes Alex heart back into action when he collapsed in April.

By the time paramedics arrived to take him from Fulford School to York Hospital, Alex was sitting up and talking. He went on to make a good recovery and sat his GCSEs a few months later.

The team were recognised by SADS UK at the National Lifesaver Defibrillator Awards held at the Royal College of Nursing London earlier this month.

Since Alex’s collapse, the school has raised enough money to fund three new defibrillators, two for the school and one to be placed in the community.
