Record entries put space at a premium

RYEDALE'S biggest venue is running out of wall space after a record number of local artists submitted work for one of the district's biggest shows.

The Milton Rooms in Malton is hosting the Ryedale Open exhibition which is now in its 33rd year and has this year attracted entries by 140 artists working in a variety of mediums.

Yvette Turnbull, Arts Officer for Ryedale District Council, who organises the show, said: "The Milton Rooms are the largest venue in Ryedale but we are still going to really struggle to fit everything in this year.

"It's clear that the judges will have a challenge on their hands because the work, which has been created by over 140 artists of all ages, includes paintings, sculpture, photography and textiles.

"We're particularly pleased to have so many artists who have never shown before this year. But I'm very glad that I'm not on the panel. The people of Ryedale are a very talented lot."

The Ryedale Open is celebrating 33 years of shows and has become known for showing work of all styles.

The show is open from tomorrow (Saturday 17) to Saturday July 24 from 10am to 4pm (not Sunday). It is free to visit and last year was enjoyed by nearly 2,000 people in just one week.
