Recycling day idea re-used for fourth time

CRAVEN district residents are getting a chance to dispose of unwanted items and help the environment at the same time.

The Craven local strategic partnership (CLSP) is holding a fourth "Give and Take" day where people can dump items they do not want and pick up some they do.

Becki Tighe, the climate change development officer appointed by the CLSP, said: "By re-using things instead of throwing them away, we reduce landfill, reduce fly-tipping, and help save valuable resources. Give and Take days also offer people on low incomes the chance to pick up items they might need.

"These events are unusual in that no money changes hands. We want people to have a good look round and help themselves to what they want at no cost.

"Hopefully the Give and Take days will encourage re-use and recycling of waste keeping perfectly good items away from landfill. At the previous Give and Take days, approximately one tonne of waste was diverted from landfill for each event, and virtually all items donated were taken away by others. Any items in good condition left over after the event are donated to charity."

Following successful events in Bentham, Settle and Grassington earlier this year, the next Give and Take day is on Saturday at Christ Church in Keighley Road, Skipton.

The CLSP includes representatives from voluntary sector organisations, public bodies such as the District Council and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority and private businesses.
