Red Riding clinches award for best TV drama

AN acclaimed three-part drama focusing on the dark side of life in Yorkshire at the time of the Ripper murders has been deemed last year's Best TV Drama at the final South Bank Show Awards.

The harrowing Red Riding series, based on the cult crime novels by Ossett-born author David Peace, took first prize at the awards night hosted by presenter Melvin Bragg. Actor Sean Bean accepted the award on behalf of the team behind the trilogy, which aired on Channel 4 last year.

Hugo Heppell, head of production at regional screen agency Screen Yorkshire, which part-funded the series, said: "We are thrilled the last-ever South Bank Show Awards has recognised the outstanding achievement that is Red Riding."

The Damned United, a feature-length adaptation of Peace's fictional account of Brian's Clough doomed tenure as Leeds United manager, was nominated for Best Film but lost out to Fish Tank.
