Referee's support for cancer charity

Former Premiership and international referee Uriah Rennie was yesterday unveiled as the new patron of Sheffield's Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Mr Rennie, who said he had some experience of family members and close personal friends being affected by cancer, will be working to raise awareness of the charity and the importance of fundraising.

The Sheffield-born referee hopes to inspire the local community to choose Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity when taking part in fundraising events.

He said: "I have been involved in fundraising events for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity in the past but decided that I wanted to increase my involvement to help further raise the profile of the charity in the region and beyond.

"The charity works incredibly hard to try and make a difference to those unfortunate enough to be diagnosed with cancer, as well as their friends and family.

"They are extremely dedicated and do try to keep Sheffield at the forefront of research and care and I hope that by becoming a patron, I can help contribute to this legacy in the long term."
