Yorkshire voted by 58 per cent to 42 per cent in favour of Leave, an even bigger margin of victory than the national result.

Just over 70 per cent of those eligible to vote took part across the region but in some areas the turnout was higher, including Craven at 81 per cent.

Leave took the vote by 58 per cent to 42 per cent as only three of the 21 districts voted to remain in the European Union.

In total 1,580.937 people backed Brexit in comparison to 1,158,298 who favoured the remain camp.

This trend 58-42 per cent mirrors the national result, which has shocked the nation this morning.

Early results from areas like Richmondshire, Scarborough and Craven offered a hint of what was to come as they all declared victories for Leave.

But the signs became even more ominous for Remain as Sheffield, the first major urban area in the region to declare, also backed Leave.

Cheers rang out through the Leeds arena, the hub for referendum results in Yorkshire, as area after area backed Brexit.

Harrogate, York and Leeds were the only districts to offer Yorkshire Remain campaigners a crumb of comfort.

Matthew Elliott, Leeds-born chief executive of Vote Leave, said: “Thank you so much to the people of Yorkshire who voted for Vote Leave. Yorkshire was a key part of the country to deliver us this tremendous victory and I am grateful to all of the voters in Yorkshire who gave us victory, especially readers of the Yorkshire Post.”
