Regiment shows off Olympic links

AS a major military operation gets under way on London’s streets in advance of the 2012 Olympic Games, a North Yorkshire regimental museum has unveiled a special exhibition marking where its troops have served during previous tournaments.

The display, called Olympic Years – Fighting to win on track and battlefield, at the Green Howards Regimental Museum in Richmond, shows what the Green Howards were doing in the summers that the Olympics took place, from the first modern games in 1896, right up to their role in London 2012.

It features artefacts from the Green Howards’ time stationed in the Boer War, India in 1920 and 1936, Malaya in 1952, the Cold War in Germany, Libya in 1962, Northern Ireland in the 1970s and 1980s, Bosnia in 1996 and Afghanistan in 2008.

Key memorabilia include Hitler’s name plate from the Sports Platz in 1936 when the Olympics were held in Berlin, and an Army chaplain backpack used in Libya in the 1960s.

The exhibition was opened by the chairman of trustees, Major General Andrew Farquhar, and runs until December 22.
