Regional unity in action over freezing roads

COUNCIL leaders in Yorkshire have joined forces to lobby the Government to stock more salt to prevent a repeat of shortages that caused major travel problems during the freezing winter.

Local authorities limited the number of roads they gritted during the severe weather when salt supplies ran low.

Now the region's council chiefs have written to Minister of State for Transport Sadiq Khan.

Councillor Roger Stone, Chair of Local Government Yorkshire and Humber and leader of Rotherham Council, said: "The recent weather across the country showed how essential it is for us to have sufficient salt supplies locally, but also be able to adapt to extreme conditions with extra salt available on demand."

City of York Council leader Coun Andrew Waller said the letter demonstrated the strength of the cross-party collaboration across the region.
