Regulator lifts sanctions on under-fire NHS trust

Sanctions imposed on an under-fire NHS trust in the region have been eased but the regulator has warned concerns remain.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust was plunged into crisis two years ago after it emerged it was facing a multi-million deficit, with problems exacerbated by the failure of a key IT project.

Now regulator Monitor says the NHS trust is being better run and has lifted concerns over the way it is being managed.

It said strengthening its senior leadership and improving how its board was run had helped ensure it could provide better quality care for patients by making sure problems could be identified and fixed.

But it said concerns remained over its strategic and financial planning.

Paul Chandler, regional director at Monitor, said: “It has taken some time, but the trust has made significant improvements in how it is run and strengthened its senior leadership.

“We think patients are benefiting from the progress that’s been made but want to ensure that the trust continues to improve, particularly in sticking to its plan to deliver quality and sustainable services to patients.”

Trust chairman Martin Havenhand said: “Strong leadership has been the key to these improvements. I hope that this news will increase the momentum for the trust continuing to making real quality improvements to services.”
