Remembering the disappeared

Memorial events are being held in West Yorkshire this week to commemorate those who have gone missing in conflicts.

British Red Cross volunteers and staff are marking the sixth International Day of the Disappeared by planting a memorial garden at St Augustine’s Family Centre in Hanson Lane, Halifax, today.

Members of the community are invited to attend and plant a flower at 1pm.

Two exhibitions will also take place from tomorrow until Friday at Bradford Peace Museum, from 10am to 4pm, and Wakefield Cathedral, from 9am to 4pm.

The events will feature poetry, photos and case studies and provide space for people to share their own experiences.

The charity’s annual commemoration day, on August 30, is recognised by the United Nations aims to keep alive the memories of those who have vanished and whose fate is still not known.

Sarah Foster, of the charity’s international family tracing service in West Yorkshire, said: “By organising these events we hope to raise awareness that there are people in West Yorkshire who have been affected by the disappearance of family members and we want to support them.”
