Renovation wins award for builder

A HULL-based building contractor will receive an award today for renovation work on one of the city's oldest buildings.

Hull Civic Society is giving a Good Mark award to Houlton, for its work to replace the cupola, or bell tower, sitting above the chapel at The Charterhouse.

The cupola has been completely replaced because of the dangerous condition of the old one, and the civic society said it was pleased with the results at the Grade I listed building.

Civic society chairman John Netherwood said: "In this age of automation it is very rewarding to know that the city still has access to the traditional skills which can help to preserve our rich heritage of beautiful buildings.

"Houlton is a long-established local company and they have been involved in many high profile buildings in the city. We are pleased that a local company had the opportunity to show off local skills and talents on such an important local landmark."

The Charterhouse was founded as an almshouse in 1384 by Michael de la Pole and still provides a home for people today.

A dome that had previously been on the bell tower since 1780 was replaced in 2009.
