Replacement for flood-damaged health centre to be officially opened

A purpose-built clinic will be formally opened this week – four years after the original building was wrecked by the floods.

Clinic staff will join Karen Knapton, chairman of NHS East Riding and local community representatives, to open Cottingham Clinic officially at 2pm on Thursday.

The building had to be demolished after being inundated in 2007. Its services were run from nearby locations.

The 290 sq m building, constructed by Brandesburton-based company Foremans Relocatable Building Systems and clad in brick, offers the same range of services, including podiatry, orthoptics and hearing aid services. It also houses child health clinics, examination and treatment facilities and community dental services.

The scheme cost £900,000, including £500,000 for the building and demolishing the existing clinic and creating a new car park with landscaping. To reduce flooding risks, it has been built on the higher ground of the old car park.

More disabled parking spaces and space for cycles have been installed.

Karen Knapton said: “The new clinic is modern and accessible, and will particularly suit the health needs of Cottingham’s older population, as well as the young families who attend the child health clinics. The use of a recycled building structure provides excellent value for money, as well as having a number of strong environmental benefits.

“We appreciate that it has taken some time, but we are delighted to welcome community services staff and patients back to Cottingham. I want to thank the local community for their patience and support.”
