Replacement Voyage made more secure

A STATUE stolen from its plinth for scrap metal is once again maintaining its vigil over the Humber after a replacement was made.

Thieves sparked outrage last July when they tore down Voyage, which has a sister monument at Vik, in Iceland, and commemorates links between the communities forged by the fishing industry as a tribute to seafarers and 1,000 years of sea-trading with Iceland. The new 6ft bronze will be officially unveiled this week after being lowered into place at Victoria Pier in Hull yesterday after a copy was made by the original sculptor, Steinunn Thorarinsdottir.

This time it should be more secure as longer pins were used to secure it to the plinth. The replacement cost £40,000, while it is the thought the original would have been worth about £250 as scrap.
