Rescuers save walker trapped in mud

COASTGUARDS raced time and the tide to pull a man from mud as the sea rose towards him between Filey and Flamborough yesterday afternoon.

The hiker, aged in his mid-50s and believed to be from Bridlington, tried to climb the cliff to escape the incoming tide but got stuck up to his knees in wet mud, with waves breaking over him from a heavy swell.

He raised the alarm at 4pm and a coastguard rescue team from Filey reached him at 16.35 as RNLI lifeboats from Filey and Flamborough stood by. Filey coastguard Adrian Daniels got close enough for the trapped man to throw one end of a towel and get pulled free. He was taken by lifeboat to Filey and then to Scarborough Hospital for checks. Mr Daniels said: “He stayed calm throughout but he was soaked and cold.”

Solent Coastguard performed a similar rescue on a woman who got stuck in quicksand while walking her dog close to Nash Farm Holiday Park at Barton On Sea, Hampshire, yesterday morning.
