THREE youths were caught with a bag of cannabis after a member of a Neighbourhood Watch scheme reported a “funny smell in an alleyway” to police.

South Yorkshire Police say a group co-ordinator was attending a meeting at Derwent Road, Mexborough, last month and raised concerns with PC Janine Kelly and PCSO Annette Flavell.

The officers went to investigate and found three 15-year-old boys who had a bag of cannabis.

The local youths were given a cannabis caution, meaning they will be dealt with more severely in the future if there is any repeat of the incident, and given strong advice about the danger of drugs.

The cannabis was brought back to the Neighbourhood Watch meeting so members could identify the smell, before being booked in an Doncaster Police Station.
