Residents celebrate five better years

A RESIDENTS' group launched to claim Yorkshire's own Trafalgar Square back from crime and anti-social behaviour is celebrating its fifth anniversary.

The Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square will hold an annual meeting this week to provide a look back at the achievements since the group was established.

The Scarborough square made national headlines in 2005 after the Yorkshire Post revealed residents were unable to hold a street party to mark Trafalgar Day because of troublemakers.

The local community decided to take a stand and the Residents and Friends of Trafalgar Square turned the tide on drug dealing, alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour.

The meeting will highlight major successes including the development of two greens, community events including the Fair in the Square and a Yorkshire in Bloom Neighbourhood Award.

It will be held on Thursday from 7.30pm at Scarborough Bowls Centre.

The group is seeking to recruit new volunteers to join the committee and help with a gardening club. More information is available from Colin Charles on 01723 363845.
