Residents given say on housing plan

A SERIES of consultation events will begin this week over a controversial plan which will guide how many houses are built in Rotherham over the next 15 years and where the developments will take place.

Two years ago, Rotherham Council published a blueprint which showed around 25,000 new homes at sites across the borough, including some on green belt land, which led to an avalanche of protest.

As a result of changes to national policy brought in by the coalition Government, the authority has now revised its forecast, almost halving the number of houses which could be built by 2027.

However, the new plans have also drawn criticism from those who protested last time, again over the fact that they show new homes being built on green belt land.

Planning officers will start their series of consultation events in Rawmarsh on Wednesday, and will have visited most communities by September.

A list of consultation venues is available at www.rotherham.gov.uk/forwardplanning, and the document is also available at the council’s libraries and customer service centres.
