Residents given say on scheme to transform historic quarry workings

INGLETON residents have been asked to give their say on plans to transform a disused quarry for recreation and tourism.

Plans for Mealbank Quarry, which fell silent in 1910, are being developed by several local, regional and national organisations.

Don Gamble, of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, said: "Mealbank Quarry could be a real asset for Ingleton, and plans to sensitively develop the site have been discussed for several years."

The Mealbank Quarry Development Group held an event in Mealbank Hall at the quarry yesterday where residents were encouraged to give their opinions on the site, a Scheduled Ancient Monument and Site of Special Scientific Interest. Archaeologists Dr David J Johnson and Jamie Quartermaine were on hand to answer questions.

The group includes representatives of Ingleton Parish Council, Ingleborough Archaeology Group, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, English Heritage and Craven District Council.

The redevelopment is expected to cost between 50,000 and 250,000, and is being funded by the North Yorkshire Aggregates Grants Scheme and Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority.
